Ni-ssan X-Trail Bon-a-Vis-ta

So, it seems many Newfoundlanders are up in arms over that new Nissan Bonavista commercial. Personally, the Newfoundlanders I know find it pretty funny.

Now, I will say, I’m a Toronto girl born and raised. What I used to know about the Rock pretty much extended as far as a bunch of really bad Newfie jokes. ‘Til I met the bf… a native Newfoundlander for many, many generations. And I’ll admit that even after five years, I still find his mom’s accent a little hard to understand, but I’ve grown to love the rhythmicallity of it all. Particularly after spending three weeks in Saint John’s last summer.

Needless to say, I’ve spent a lot of time listening to a thick Newfoundlander accent. Which I’ve realized is what actually bugs me about the commercial. The supposed Newfoundlander dealer in the commercial actually isn’t from Newfoundland. And you can tell… When he talks? It’s *too* rhythmic. *too* practiced. *too* trying to hard.
And that’s something worth getting up in arms over.

But I kinda want the car…have you seen the Pana Roof? How cool is that?

The things that keep me up nights

So, yesterday, for my weekend job, I wrote this headline:

NDP endorse Layton’s call for Afghan pullout

and this teaser:

CP – The NDP has officially become Canada’s first major political party to call for a withdrawal of our troops from Afghanistan.

Here’s what’s bugging me. In the headline, NDP is considered plural, so we have endorse, instead of endorses. But then in the teaser, I used NDP as singular, thus the “has.”

So this is wrong. I *know* it’s wrong. And yet, if I change either, it sounds odd to my ear. And I can’t figure out why. I know. Of all the things to fret about? This doesn’t rank that high.

*sigh*
